Some Decatur County residents are born here; others come for work or family. But one resident has gone on quite a journey to call this slice of Southwest Georgia home.

This month, Elephant Aid International (EAI) is celebrating Bo’s 39th birthday — honoring a playful, gentle, and quietly strong elephant who found freedom at Elephant Refuge North America (ERNA).

Today, Jeffrey is joined by Carol Buckley of Elephant Air International to help us celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day.

In honor of World Elephant Day, Carol joined Triad Today’s beloved host Jeffrey Griffin on WSJS Radio to share how Elephant Aid International is transforming the lives of captive-held elephants — including Bo, Tarra, and Mundi.

Bainbridge local Haylie Moye first heard about Elephant Refuge North America in 2018, when the operation began taking shape, but years before any elephants would arrive.

Tarra is one of three elephants at Elephant Aid International in Attapulgus, Georgia.

The elephant refuge has 850 acres of land for elephants Tarra, Bo, and Mundi to explore, graze, sleep, and play.

WCTV’s Ava Van Valen spoke with Founder Carol Buckley about the refuge and to learn more about Tarra’s story.

• Tarra, an 8-foot tall, 9,700-pound Asian elephant, has been a cherished resident of the refuge for over three years.

 Bo retired from circus life three years ago and now lives in an elephant paradise located in southernmost Georgia in the small rural town of Attapulgus.

We are grateful to World Animal Protection for providing support when we rescued Mundi. Now their elephant welfare effort is focused on Joyce. We’re honored that Elephant Refuge North America is featured in this impactful video, showcasing how captive elephants should live. One day we hope all captive-held elephants will live with autonomy in an environment that meets their needs.
