I’ve Arrived

I have arrived!  Surprise, today is Nepal’s New Year’s Day! Not a coincidence I am sure. The flight was easy; I spent most of it sleeping.  Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised by the low noise level and lack of high energy activity that is standard at most airports; the energy was peaceful.

I scanned the crowd of waiting drivers displaying handmade signs with names scribbled in different styles and sizes looking for my name, when from the crowd emerged a young man. Between his hands he was holding a sign bearing my name and he wore a huge smile as he questioned, “Carol Buckley?”  A surge of joy ran through me as I returned the smile. I had arrived!

It was a short drive to Thamel through crowded streets, and I mean crowded, with cars, pedestrians, buses, motor bikes and rickshaws crisscrossing over every inch of the narrow road. Surprisingly the congestion was stimulating and I was thankful that the air quality was not what I expected; it was not at all offensive. Colors blurred as we sped past every size and shape shop that lined the narrow pothole riddled streets.

The main road leading to my lodging, The Sun Rise Cottage, billed as “like your home,” was blocked in preparation for the New Year’s Day celebration. Color was bursting out everywhere — flowers, lights, fabrics…and music. What a fabulous welcome!

And how wonderful that the standard greeting is namaste. I feel like I have really arrived home.

Namaste,

Carol

    Hi Carol,
I am glad that you arrived safely and that there was a wonderful celebration, in your honor, whether they knew it or not. I am so excited for you with this new chapter in your life and the lives of so many elephants. You leave behind the dark shadow that is hovering over TES, but also your beautiful girls; proving that there is ying and yang in everything. This separation will be a season of your lifetime and it will be spent not only to benefit elephants, but as a soothing balm for your soul, as well. We will keep the vigil going here, in your stead, and we will take good care of your girls until you return. I miss the beautiful stories that you would impart on the website, but now there will be even more amazing stories of elephants, cultures and foreign lands. Your journey will be like a Technicolored novel coming to life for each of us. Please let us know about each elephant and inspiring human you meet and let your stories be our eyes into this amazing world you have entered. Please keep a detailed journal as I am certain there will be a best selling novel as well as a few children’s books that can come from your journey. There is a very detailed and awe inspiring, Australian illistrator and author of children’s books by the name of Graeme Base. If you find the time or feel the inclination, you might want to shoot your story, of this incredible journey your are embarking upon, to him and see if there might be an opportunity for a collaboration between the two of you. He blows my mind with his books and artwork and you with your detailed and wonderful stories. Since I am sure you will be very busy, it might be nice to have someone else doing part of the development and in turn, having some funds that could be channeled into your foundation for your continued work. Just my thoughts, perhaps of no interest to you, at this time or even Mr. Base, who knows. I will keep you and the girls in my thoughts and my prayers. My very best to you, Carol, let us each celebrate the light that is life.
    Take care and keep safe,
    Sherry Heim

Congratulations on an exciting arrival, and on a New Year too – how auspicious! I also have to say “Congrats” for being able to sleep on a plane, something I have never been able to do. Being well rested on arrival makes a big difference. Your fans know you will give us a great look a Nepal through your eyes. We especially await the word of your “first” elephant.

    Namaste, Carol,

    Hi Carol,
Sure glad you arrived there safely and life is being good to you.
I cannot hardly wait to hear back how things went with your encounters not only with elephants but with the Mahouts and people of Nepal and other cities.
Thank you for being there and educating the mahouts proper care of the elephants without use of bullhooks and sticks.
