One woman’s adoption of a baby elephant began a forty-two-year journey that has revolutionized the care and management of captive elephants worldwide.

An elephant refuge will soon call south Georgia home in as little as six months. The broker who sold the land said he is glad they finally found the perfect spot for the elephants to live.

Folks in Decatur County will be getting some new neighbors who weigh 2 to 4 tons. Elephant Aid International is starting a project called the Elephant Refuge North America.

In as early as six months, a new sanctuary with over 800 acres of land could be welcoming their first residents — female Asian Elephants — to South Georgia.

It took two years of searching, but Carol Buckley and Elephant Aid International were finally able to find the perfect piece of property for her planned Elephant Refuge North America.

By the end of next year, elephants will be roaming 850 acres of land in South Georgia. The new elephant sanctuary, located about 30 miles northwest of Tallahassee in Decatur County, is taking over what was once a cattle ranch.

Asian elephants may one day roam the pastures of South Georgia mere miles from Tallahassee. She [Carol Buckley] has a vision of creating a sanctuary for as many as 10 elephants on the land, which is less than a 30-mile drive from Tallahassee. And she wants to bring her elephant Tarra with her.
