Rewarding Work

The other day I hopped back on a plane and flew to California, to provide expert testimony before a city council.

I presented information in support of a local effort that would ban animal circuses inside city limits. It was encouraging to see the number of citizens who had came to the meeting, to show their support of the ban.

One woman approach the microphone, practically in tears. She explained that she was not aware of this effort prior to attending the meeting. Instead of speaking to the city council members, the woman turned to the supporters of the ban and thanked us for speaking out for the animals.

Speaking in support of those who have no voice or no ability to choose their way of life is perhaps the most important things we, as humans, can do. Thank you for giving a voice to the voiceless, once again, Carol. I am glad to see that you are still continuing your work here in the United States. There is still so much here that needs to be changed in order for elephants to be given back their dignity and treated with the respectful kindness they deserve.

I came back today and revisited the new map. It was so much fun to trek along on your journey and actually have a map to get an idea of the area you were covering. How exciting and humbling it must have been to be able to work beside such amazing people and to know that each of them held you in high esteem. I hope that your trip encouraged you to never let another cause you to doubt your self-worth or your amazing strength. There are many battles that we must face in life and from each one we take away an important lesson. Perhaps the most important lesson is that we can only change our selves. All of the others, we can only hope to teach by example and pray that they find a peaceful and fulfilling way to attain their goals. Life brings to us only two things; Blessings and blessings in disguise. Sometimes when we are walking into a difficult situation it seems impossible to believe this. Once we have passed through the situation and emerged on the other side, looking back upon where we have been, we can always find the blessing. This trip was a huge blessing that you could not have taken if your situation with TES had not been as it was. It seems that no matter what happens in our life there is someone, somewhere, who is guiding our path, making sure that our life remains a forward motion. Thank you for sharing your blessings and your blessings in disguise with all of us.

What a beautiful story of the difference that can be made by education. I am so hopeful that animal circuses will be banned for good, in memory of all of the elephants who have suffered so profoundly. Carol, thank you for your continued commitment to this incredibly noble cause. You are a hero to myself and so many others who care about these amazing creatures. …And the grace and determination that you have shown in the past year, it just continues to highlight that you are a truly amazing person.
